What does it mean that the Bible is inspired?

Video Text

When we say that the Bible is inspired, we mean that when the authors wrote the Bible, God spoke through them. Their writing was not a mechanical dictation where the people wrote down what they heard directly spoken from God. Nor did they go into a trance-like state where they were unaware of what they were doing. Instead, the writers of the Bible were free to express what they wanted, the way they wanted, and when they wanted. Yet, God was also moving through them to ensure the integrity and accuracy of what they said. Therefore, the Christian church did not give us the Bible. Instead, it recognizes what the Bible already was, God’s inspired word. After all, Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”

The Bible is inspired

2 Timothy 3:16 says it all Scripture is inspired by God. The word “inspire” is the Greek is theópneustos, θεόπνευστος. it means God-breathed. It only occurs in that verse in the entire Bible. Perhaps the reason it occurs only once is to demonstrate its uniqueness. It is a one-time use for the one true God’s work in history through His people. Therefore everything found in the Scripture is from Him. This means that it accurately records history, including the evils that people have committed. The inspired word teaches wisdom and utters prophecy. All of this is from God. All of it is God-breathed. All of it is inspired.

Quote

Inspiration is “that extraordinary or supernatural divine influence vouchsafed to those who wrote the Holy Scriptures, rendering their writings infallible. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God” (R.V., “Every scripture inspired of God”), 2Ti 3:16. This is true of all the “sacred writings,” not in the sense of their being works of genius or of supernatural insight, but as “theopneustic,” i.e., “breathed into by God” in such a sense that the writers were supernaturally guided to express exactly what God intended them to express as a revelation of his mind and will.” (https://www.blueletterbible.org/search/Dictionary/viewTopic.cfm?topic=ET0001884)
