Why do we need the Bible?

by | Aug 24, 2023 | One-Minute Videos

We need the Bible because it is God’s main way of communicating to us. It is inspired (2 Tim. 3:16), which means that everything it addresses is true. Also, because it comes from God, it is the final authority in everything it addresses. The Bible tells us about God, creation, sin, heaven, hell, how to get saved, who Jesus is, what He did on the cross, our need for faith in Jesus, and much more. And, of course, we need the Bible because we cannot know the truth about God on our own. We can’t go up to heaven to learn about Him. That is why He sent His written word to us through the prophets and apostles. So, we need the Bible to guide us, instruct us, and reveal to us what the true and living God wants for us.

More on why we need the Bible

There are many reasons we need the Bible. Here are a few more.

  1.  To Know God: In its pages, God reveals His character, holiness, infinite nature, sovereign work, his love, his patience, his grace, and his sacrifice for us in Christ
  2. To Understand Ourselves: The Bible reveals a great deal about human nature including our sinfulness (Eph. 2:3), our failures, temptations, limitations, and how we cannot keep the Law of God.
  3. The Law:  the law is a reflection of the character of God. It speaks about the do’s and don’ts of moral behavior. We learn about this in Scripture and we also learn how the law is a tutor to lead us to Jesus (Gal. 3:24), because we can’t keep it.
  4. The necessity of Faith: faith is the means by which we are justified (Rom. 3:28; 4:1-5; 5:1). It is the faith that God grants to us ( Phil. 1:29 ) that is in Jesus (John 6:39), that is credited to us as righteousness (Phil. 3:9).
  5. Encouragement:  the Scriptures speak of how God will never leave us or forsake us (Heb. 13:5). How he loves us (John 3:16). The life can be difficult, we can be encouraged that God is in control (Eph. 1:11), and that those who trusted in Christ, though we may have difficulties, will experience eternal life with him.
  6. Wisdom: the Bible offers us practical guidance to have a fulfilling life in a multitude of topics including family, business, love, humility, compassion, and forgiveness.

Quote:

“I have never met a mature, fruitful, strong, spiritually discerning Christian who is not full of Scripture, devoted to regular meditation on Scripture, and given to storing it in the heart through Bible memorization — and that’s not a coincidence. So, what I want to do is persuade our new believing friend that it is absolutely essential, after coming to faith in Christ, to be radically, deeply, experientially devoted — unshakably, unwaveringly persuaded — that reading and meditating on and understanding and memorizing and enjoying the Scriptures is absolutely essential for the Christian life, which would include being in the word every day with the aim that we will meet God there and, little by little, the glory of his truth will fill and transform our lives.” (https://www.desiringgod.org/interviews/ten-reasons-to-read-the-bible-every-day)
