How do we identify true miracle workers?

by | May 17, 2021 | Questions, Other

Jesus warned us about false miracles and false miracle workers. Paul told us that Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. This means that we need to be very careful to identify true miracle workers, as well as false ones. Please consider the following scriptures.identify true miracles teachers

  • “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23 “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS,'” (Matt. 7:22–23).
  • “For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect,” (Matt. 24:24).
  • “For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light,” (2 Cor. 11:13–14).

So, Scripture warns us about false miracle workers. Therefore, you ought not automatically believe that someone is speaking for God, just because miracles are present. But, how do we find out if the people who claim to be from God and who also perform miracles are good or bad?  It is simple. You look at their fruit (Matt. 7:20). You look at what they teach and do.

Identifying true miracle workers

True teachers of God put their faith in Christ alone and point others to Christ alone for salvation (Acts 4:12; John 14:6).  They are humble before God and before people (Phil. 2:3-4). They affirm that there is only one God (Isaiah 43:10; 44:6, 8; 45:5) and that God is a Trinity consisting of three distinct and simultaneous persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matt. 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14). They teach that salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.  There is much more, so I recommend you go to https://carm.org/doctrine-and-theology and read.  Nevertheless, here’s a list of some of the things that are true people of God teach so we might better identify true miracle workers.

  1. Promote Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross:  Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is the only reason any of us can be saved (John 4:12; 1 John 1:7).  True teachers point to Jesus just as the Holy Spirit did (John 14:26; 15:26).
  2. Promote that Jesus is the only way to salvation:  Jesus is the only way to salvation and all true teachers of God’s word will point to him as the only way (John 14:6; Acts 4:12)
  3. Promote salvation by grace alone:  The forgiveness of our sins is by grace alone (Eph. 2:8-9), through faith alone (Rom. 3:28; 5:1), in Christ alone (John 14:6)
  4. Teaches that God is a Trinity:  There is only one God (Isaiah 43:10; 44:6, 8; 45:5). God is a Trinity consisting of three distinct and simultaneous persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matt. 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14). He is not one God in three manifestations. He has always existed as a Trinity.
  5. Calls to repentance from sin and following Jesus:  Jesus saved us so we could be with the Lord God, but also that we are free from the bonds of sin. This is why we are to repent from our sins (Acts 17:30; Rom. 6:2; Gal. 5:19–21). We are to be holy because God is holy (1 Pet. 1:16).
  6. Calls people to godliness:  because we have been bought with the blood of Christ (Acts 20:28), we are to live godly lives (1 Tim. 6:3, 11).
  7. Calls people to get baptized: A call to be baptized as an outward sign of commitment to Christ:  Baptism does not save us from our sins (Rom. 3:28; 4:5; 5:1). It is a covenant sign of our commitment to Christ (Matt. 28:19).
  8. Calls people to love and worship the true God:  God is worthy of all honor, praise, and adoration (Matt. 22:37). Therefore, we are to worship God.
  9. Calls people to love their neighbors:  Jesus told us to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matt. 22:39). therefore, we or to show kindness, patience, and forgiveness to others.
  10. Exhibits the fruit of the Spirit:  There is one fruit of the Spirit because the Greek word for fruit is in the singular in Eph. 5:22-23. If a teacher’s truly from God, he will manifest the fruit of the Spirit.
  11. Rejects adoration given to them:  True teachers of God reject adoration given to them by people (Acts 14:13-15). They point to Jesus as the reason for their salvation and our hope. If they willingly receive adoration and praise, it is a definite warning sign.
  12. Is Teachable: All true teachers of God are teachable because they are humble before Jesus which means they’ll also be humble before people. If they are not humble, then they are not showing the fruit of the Spirit (2 Timothy 2:24–25).
  13. Endures difficulty: Sometimes being a Christian means enduring difficulty.  This is part of the Christian life (2 Cor. 11:26; 2 Tim. 3:10-11).
  14. Are servants of all:  If a teacher of the word of God is not willing to work, to help clean, to do menial tasks in support of the body of Christ, then he is not fulfilling the commands of Christ to be a servant of all (Matt. 23:11)
  15. Willing to lay down his life for the Christians: A true teacher of God will follow in the footsteps of Jesus who is willing to lay down his life for his people (John 10:11-13).
  16. Works to build up the body of Christ:  the calling of the leadership in the church is to equip the body of Christ for the work of service and ministry (Eph. 4:11-13). They teach people to be doers of the word of God
  17. Teach making disciples: True teachers of the word of God follow Christ and Christ’s command was to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). This means to teach people to follow Jesus, not the preacher or the teacher.

Caution is best with miracles

We must always be ready to identify true miracle workers from false ones. Though God can certainly perform them today (1 Cor. 1:7), the enemy of the gospel can also work miracles through his servants, the false prophets, the false Christ, and the false teachers (Matt. 24:14). This is why we are called to examine everything (1 Thess. 5:21) with the word of God (Acts 17:11)

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world,” (1 John 4:1–3).
