Did Jesus ever get sick?

by | Mar 29, 2024 | Jesus, Questions

The Bible does not say that Jesus did or did not get sick. So, we can’t say for sure either way. However, we can explore the two possibilities: yes, He got sick, and no, He did not get sick.  We know that Jesus was subject to the human condition. He got tired (John 4:6), became hungry (Luke 4:2), and slept (Mark 4:38). Furthermore, He was tempted in all things that we are tempted (Heb. 4:15). He was, and still is, very much human as well as God (see Hypostatic Union). So, if He was subject to the physical conditions of a human, such as being tired, getting hungry, and sleeping, then it seems logical to say that He got sick. However, we see He came in contact with many sick people but was never affected by their sickness. Jesus touched the leprous man and healed him (Matt. 8:2-4; Luke 5:12-13). Jesus was at the home of Simon, the leper, and never got sick (Matthew 26:6). He was touched by the woman with the hemorrhage for 12 years, and she was healed, but He was not defiled (Mark 5:25-29). So, it seems as though He was not subject to sickness. But, let’s take a look at this a bit more.

Did Jesus get sick

Possibility one: Jesus did not get sick

When Adam sinned, the world was affected by his transgression. This is found in Rom. 5:19 where it says that by his sin, “the many were made sinners.” Also, sin entered the world through Adam (Rom. 5:12). This means that the physical world was also affected by sin, which is why we have disease, plagues, earthquakes, bad storms, etc. But if Jesus did not inherit the sinful nature from Adam, then it makes sense to say He was not subject to the curse, which included sickness. Now, this is not a definitive argument. But it makes sense to say He probably did not get sick.

Possibility two: Jesus did get sick

However, if Jesus got physically sick, it would be due to the sin in the world around Him. After all, Jesus was affected by the sin of others in that they struck Him (John 18:22) and crucified Him (Matt. 27:35). We can see that He could be affected by the physical world around Him. But was it to the extent that He got sick? We don’t know.

A sacrifice without blemish

We cannot say for sure that Jesus did or did not get sick. Perhaps Jesus was physically capable of being sick but never did. But, if He did get sick, then this raises a question. Would a sickness be a blemish upon the holy person of Jesus? I ask this because Deuteronomy 17:1 tells us that no sacrifice to the Lord can have a blemish or any defect. Would having been sick even once be a defect? I cannot answer. But it is something worth considering.

Conclusion

Because Christ was sinless, He did not inherit a sinful nature. He touched people who were sick and never got sick (at least it is not recorded that He did.) Finally, He had to be a pure sacrifice without blemish. So, for these reasons, I lean towards the option that Jesus never got sick.
