What is Roman Catholicism?

by | Feb 12, 2021 | Roman Catholicism, World Religions

Roman Catholicism is a worldwide religious organization headquartered in Vatican City in Italy. It claims to be the true Christian church founded by Jesus 2000 years ago. There are over 1 billion Catholics worldwide.  The Roman Catholic Church has been heavily involved in Western cultural development but has expanded to all parts of the world.Roman Catholic Church Heirarchy

“The Catholic Church is a global community of believers founded by Jesus Christ over two-thousand years ago. There are over 1 billion Catholics on earth. The Catholic Church is made up on many people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Sometimes the Catholic Church is thought of as a big tent – it encompasses many people within the spectrum of political belief all united by the same central religious belief or creed.”

Roman Catholics are in submission to the Pope, who they say is the visible head of the church and that Jesus is the invisible head.  Under the Pope are cardinals.  Under the cardinals are archbishops, then bishops, priests, deacons, and the laity.1  Catholicism teaches that the seven sacraments (baptism, Eucharist, confirmation, etc.) are part of the salvation process for Catholics. It further teaches “that all men may attain salvation through faith, Baptism and the observance of the Commandments” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2068).

Is the Roman Catholic Church the true church?

Roman Catholicism is not the true church. If anything, it is a false church since it teaches works salvation, as paragraph 2068 above (among many others) demonstrates.  In fact, the process of salvation in Catholicism is lengthy and demanding.  It includes baptism, keeping commandments, taking the Eucharist, performing sacraments, etc. In fact, salvation is tied up in Roman Catholicism and its self-proclaimed authority to dispense grace from heaven via the sacraments of which the Catholic Church is in charge. Its gospel distorts the true gospel of justification by faith alone in Christ alone (Romans 3:28; 4:1-5; 5:1; Galatians 2:16, 21). For more information on the Catholic Church’s long and complicated process of salvation, see the article A summary of the process of salvation in Roman Catholicism.

Furthermore, it elevates Mary to a ridiculously high level.Catholic woman kissing statue of Mary

“Mary is the all holy one (CCC 2677); second to Eve (Mystici Corpois Christ, par. 110); is prayed to (CCC 2679); sits at the right hand of Christ (Pope Pius X, 1835-1914, Ad Diem Illum Laetissimum, 14); is Advocate, Helper, Benefactress, and Mediatrix (CCC 969); the mother of the members of Christ (CCC 963); Queen over all things (CCC 966); brings eternal life by her intercession (CCC 969); helped make atonement for sins (Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma, Ott, page 213); crushed the head of the serpent (Pope Pius IX, Ineffabilis Deus); delivers souls from death (CCC 966). When considering the Church, there is no better way than to look to Mary, (CCC 972). Catholics entrust themselves to Mary’s prayer (CCC 2677). And, no man goeth to Christ but by His Mother,” (Vatican Website: Encyclical of Pope Leo 13th on the Rosary, Octobri Mense, Pope Leo 13th, 1903-1914).”

So, Roman Catholicism claims to be the true church founded by Jesus. Yet, it contradicts so much of Scripture.
